Dating back to 1453, this is one of England's most renowned coaching inns. A wonderful history of intrigue and romance surrounds the stunning building; The Talbot Inn is said to have provided the backdrop to Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton's blossoming relationship in 1798. These days you can find a little romance of your own by bringing a special someone to enjoy the exquisite restaurant and cosy bar - and perhaps even one of the 39 comfortably elegant rooms.

Accomplished head chef Jamie Clegg and his dedicated team are passionate about the food they create, and their menus offer outstanding dishes at sensible prices. You can choose from an à la carte selection of modern British dishes, or perhaps tuck into traditional pub favourites such as hearty homemade pies or sausage and mash. You'll notice a reassuring emphasis on locally sourced produce, and might opt for free-range Jimmy Butler pork cutlet accompanied by runner beans, roasted garlic mash and apple cider sauce. Vegetarian mains are equally delectable; try roasted courgettes with ratatouille, goat's cheese and rocket. A selection of 'bar classics' includes indulgences such as battered fresh haddock with crushed peas, chips and homemade tartare sauce, while for dessert you can treat yourself to the likes of glazed blackberry tart with blackberry sorbet and coulis, or choose from a selection of Bennett's Farm ice creams and sorbets - a heavenly finale.

The Talbot isn't just an evening affair, however, and offers equally delicious breakfast and lunch menus, plus a selection of 'proper food for small people' and unmissable Sunday lunches. Perhaps bring the family, settle in the warm atmosphere of the restaurant and tuck into a roast loin of Surrey pork with all the trimmings; or spend a lazy afternoon enjoying a bite from the terrace menu in the large garden area. On a more formal occasion, The Talbot's Champagne terrace (sponsored by Veuve Cliquot) provides a stunning setting in which to enjoy a glass of bubbles and some canapés in the sun before moving into one of the dining areas. Whatever the occasion, this outstanding inn steps up to the mark and provides ultimate relaxation, style and deliciousness
