Norse has established itself as one of the leading restaurants in the Harrogate area, offering a relaxed fine dining experience. 2017 promises to be a year of flux as there are plans to relocate the restaurant from its current venue – where by day, it is a café called Baltzersen’s, which serves appetising light bites. In 2016 Norse was listed once again in The Good Food Guide and the Michelin Guide , was awarded two AA rosettes, and was runner up in the Best Restaurant category of The Observer’s Food Monthly Award.

Head chef Simon Jewitt took over last May and offers a choice between the full set menu and a shorter version. These comprise a combination of small plates and smaller snacks of around two or three bites. On top of this, Norse currently offers a limited bar menu that is available midweek. The menu begins with a series of small bites, such as a beautifully seasoned chicken skin sandwich, and a potato and leek terrine draped with a wafer thin slice of lardo. To follow, plates may include cod served atop sea vegetables and seaweed, and with mussels and smoky sauce made from the roe, or lamb two ways: rump and shoulder, served with blood carrot and oat sauce. You’ll then sample palate-cleansing desserts like the new season Yorkshire rhubarb with green kombucha foam, and the heartier almond frangipane with sour cherry and twig-like sticks of dark chocolate, which melt as they arrive at the table. The drinks list deserves a mention, too, for how carefully it has been thought out – try something new and exciting from a large range of small-batch gins, craft beers and selection of wines that are the little different from your usual pinot grigio. While you take advantage of the homely atmosphere of the restaurant, it’s easy to get lost in the good food, drink and conversation.

The new venue, which is planned to open in spring, will offer a vastly improved experience for diners. It is set to include more comfortable seating, climate control, more wine served by the glass and a new menu format that will include a mixture of small plates and sharing dishes. We’re rather excited about this change – and also confident that the dedicated team will be able to translate the buzz of the old into something new and equally appealing. You’re guaranteed to enjoy the memorable dining experience at Norse, which has already sparked so much excitement in Harrogate.
