Wise woman, soothsayer and witch are all descriptions ascribed to Mother Shipton, whose mysterious rhyming couplets predicted the Great Fire of London, motor transport and television; now Knaresborough thrives thanks to the tourists drawn to the cave where she was born. A footpath to the cave begins beside the Mother Shipton Inn, a riverside pub that has recently reopened following a £200,000 refurbishment. The inn is known for its commitment to serving great pub food and quality cask ale, so draws in crowds of locals and tourists.

To start, I plumped for the scallops in sweet green pea sauce served with juicy black pudding and topped with crispy Parma ham. The dish was presented beautifully and was, of course, delicious. My partner sang the praises of the creamy duck liver and orange parfait, and wouldn’t share a bite. To follow, she opted for the sirloin steak while I chose the pie of the day. The pie was a castle-shaped delight; crisp pastry packed with chunks of steak and kidney in a rich ale gravy. The accompanying vegetables were fresh and brought a burst of colour to the table. We couldn’t resist rounding things off with dessert, and the sticky toffee pudding and chocolate mousse were divine.

With quality food, a stunning location and top-notch service, Mother Shipton Inn ticks every box. I predict its future will be a great success.
