The Lime Kiln has cracked an age-old conundrum: how to bridge the generation gap in pub dining. It offers both a contemporary grown-up experience and a child-friendly family haven. This is partly thanks to the well-designed space, but its real secret is technology. CCTV means kids can play in the tots' room while parents keep an eye on them via table-side TV - it also means that you can watch the football without inflicting it on the uninterested. With everyone happy and an extensive well-priced menu, there's no excuse not to tuck in. The Cullen Skink was evidently made by a soup connoisseur - the overall flavour was delightfully fresh and the haddock, potatoes and onion all at melding point, just as they should be in this traditional Scottish dish. Rich Diane sauce complemented a nicely chargrilled sirloin and its accompanying onion rings, tomatoes, mushrooms, peas and chips - a gigantic feast. The sophisticated Balmoral chicken too was a plateful of flavour - the bacon-topped tender chicken breasts encased peppery haggis and were drizzled with a delicious whisky cream. The desserts were all tempting. After what had been a rather traditionally Scottish meal, we opted for simple scoops of rich ice cream - but what an eye-catcher the deliciously sharp lemon tart on its artwork of fruit coulis was.
