Although The Turnpike may have undergone a fair few refurbishments since it first opened in 1822, its ethos is still the same as it always has been: to offer the people of Yorkshire and Lancashire a place to enjoy quality food and drink and a bit of downtime. The inn has been a popular halfway house between the two counties for centuries - even more so now, thanks to the stylish, newly refurbished guest rooms.

The Turnpike's latest proprietors, who took over in September 2011, are passionate about preserving this historic community hub. With contemporary furnishings and restored original features, The Turnpike has moved with the times without losing its individuality. Like the inn itself, the regularly changing menu offers a pleasing mix of the traditional and the modern - favourites feature alongside inventive new dishes. The wine list comprises Old and New World varieties from Willoughby's of Manchester. Perhaps start with wild mushrooms in white wine, cream and garlic served on homemade garlic ciabatta, before tucking into a hearty main of chicken supreme with Dauphinoise potatoes, wild mushroom jus and fine beans or a classic 8oz sirloin.

A menu of special seafood dishes is offered on Fridays and a first-rate roast is served every Sunday. The team here can also expertly cater for celebrations in the stunning events suite, although you certainly shouldn't wait for a special occasion to wine and dine at this lovely pub
