Yorkshire-native Mike Monkman and his French partner Joelle established the popular, intimate Monkmans Restaurant in Ilkley some six years ago. It came as no surprise that the place was bustling when we arrived and the traditionallooking candlelit dining room was just as inviting as Mike and his staff.

Choosing from the extensive wine list proved tricky so Mike recommended the exquisite Picpoul de Pinet and Faugères wines from Languedoc - the very region where Joelle grew up. Chefs Dan Peacock and Joel Monkman pride themselves on preparing fresh dishes from locally sourced ingredients including game, poultry and fish.

We opted for starters from the specials board: a generous helping of Shetland mussels with chorizo, leeks and cider and the Provençale fish soup which proved delicious and great value for money. An impressive variety of main courses was available from the specials board, early dining and à la carte menus. We selected the seared salmon and confit belly pork, which arrived beautifully presented. Desserts include classics such as tarte au citron and crème brûlée but we couldn't resist the chocolate torte and affogato - a lighter option if you're happily stuffed with food. It's safe to say we will certainly be returning
