Classic British pub dishes done well, great service and a 'local' feel are in my opinion three key elements to qualifying as a good, traditional pub. Due to the fact that such establishments are seemingly something of a rarity these days, it's reassuring to discover places like The Heathcote Inn in Leamington Spa. We felt relaxed as soon as we arrived due to the cheery welcome from behind the bar, which is stocked with a selection of real ales.

We sat in the designated restaurant area but could have enjoyed a drink in the main pub area beforehand, just as many of the regulars do. I sipped a glass of the house merlot, which was very drinkable, while we surveyed the menu and specials board. The chef sources much of his fresh produce locally and is rightly proud of every dish he serves, whether from the main menu or from the daily specials board. The waiting staff succeeded in providing a service which was helpful and attentive without being intrusive.

We chose a variety of classic dishes as well as some options less traditionally found in pubs. I started with garlic mushrooms and toast which was nothing short of excellent, while my companion enjoyed her homemade tomato and basil soup of the day - again, simple but delicious. The generous portion and pile of crisp croutons made for a filling starter. I chose my sea bass with tagliatelle and tomatoes from the specials board. The fish was deftly cooked, the tomato sauce bursting with juicy fresh flavours. My companion plumped for the chicken tikka salad and enjoyed an equally healthy serving of this tasty lighter option. The Heathcote Inn also offers excellent value for money and there are even a couple of long-running special offers - from Monday to Saturday you can select two main meals from the specials board for just £10.

To finish, I treated myself to the berry Pavlova which was packed with blackberries and juice. My companion finished off her warm chocolate fudge cake rather quickly and reported that it had been every bit as delicious as it looked. The Heathcote Inn is not far from the train station and just off the main road, so there are plenty of reasons to give it a try.
