When pulling in to the substantial car park that serves the customers of the Porridge Pot restaurant, the first thing visible is the welcome from Sandra, Ian and the team, painted on the exterior wall. This welcome is also implied by the attractive entrance and large heated patio area, and then extended further still by the friendly staff that greet customers at the door. The Porridge Pot's interior is brightly lit while still managing to maintain an ambient and relaxing atmosphere. Large mirrors and wooden beams lend a sense of rustic charm, while the tasteful accents of pattern and sumptuous upholstery indicate debonair sophistication.

The wine list is extensive and includes a section of suggested nibbles or mezze sharing platters for those not partaking in a full meal. There are also a range of beers and lagers available, including draught bitters and an intriguing strawberry flavoured beer.

The focal point of the Porridge Pot is its traditional carvery, offering a selection of the finest British meats, attractively presented vegetable accompaniments and a wide choice of sauces, mustards and gravy, including vegetarian onion gravy. The vegetarian special was ready to be served, rather than customers having to endure a wait while it is prepared.

Although the carvery vegetables are self-service, the table service for drinks, side orders and desserts was flawless, and despite the restaurant being busy, the staff were always on hand. The desserts were beautifully presented, and lived up to the visual impression of out-and-out indulgence that they created. My cinnamon Belgian waffle was topped with sliced banana and chocolate ice cream, and then contrasted in temperature by a warm and gooey toffee sauce. My partner's chocolate fudge cake was rich and sweet, a true chocoholic's temptation. Fairtrade teas and coffees are also available.

The restaurant is sandwiched between two hotels, and offers the business clientele that this engenders an opportunity for meetings over breakfast by opening at 8am on
weekday mornings. Porridge Pot's facility of a children's play area would seemingly contradict this professional capacity, but is separate from the main restaurant. The differing natures of the varied range of patrons that the Porridge Pot caters for can all exist harmoniously, enjoying assorted aspects of this exceptional place.

The children's Funhouse is open between 9.30am and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and from midday until 8pm at the weekend. There is a 4£9' height limit, and the Porridge Pot offers a parent and toddler session between 9.30am and midday, Monday to Friday.
