The Rose & Crown
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Understated decor and candlelit tables finish off the charming ambience, while helpful and friendly staff will find you a table and present you with a menu featuring local produce and seasonal variety. There is a delicious-looking deli board too, offering everything from cheese to charcuterie and fish to antipasti, but we opted for starters from the main menu and daily specials board. My companion chose crispy duck pancakes with hoisin sauce, while I had the special of devilled whitebait. The whitebait was absolutely delicious and the dish showed the confidence of the chef, serving it as simple as it should be. The rest of the starter menu is full of modern classic dishes with a definite seasonal edge. From the main menu I chose the sea bass, which was perfectly roasted and served on rice with a fennel salad. A dish of lemon-stuffed chicken breast with purple potatoes and ratatouille was met with rapture on the other side of the table. Steak, lamb and locally produced sausages are also available on the main menu, alongside the likes of tuna, salmon or a broad bean and rosemary tart. The pub was voted 'Best Pub in the UK' in 2004 and has been in the top ten UK pubs twice in the last three years. Have a drink or two in the bar and then choose your breakfast, lunch or dinner from the seasonal menu, and you'll see why The Rose & Crown is so popular and so celebrated.
