A 250-year-old former coaching inn, The Greyhound has an upmarket appeal while still retaining its old-world charm. New chef Gary Betley has designed an extensive menu that is sure to draw discerning customers from far and wide - we were certainly impressed.

After much deliberation, I opted to start with poached spicy pear and Parma ham with a savoury blackberry brulée, an unusual and exciting combination of flavours. My friend chose homemade smoky sweet chilli fishcakes on a bed of leaves with a sweet chilli dressing, followed by a succulent Barnsley chop with a rich mint and Guinness sauce. My fillet of cod with scallops in a prawn and gherkin sauce was delicious and both meals were served with caramelised roasted vegetables and new potatoes. The desserts - Mo's puds - are made locally and are absolutely phenomenal. My friend selected rhubarb and stem ginger brulée accompanied by a gingerbread man, and I chose the chocolate trio, a platter bearing a white chocolate mousse with toffee apple sauce, an intensely flavoured dark chocolate mousse and a homemade chocolate biscuit - a must for chocoholics.

The prices are surprisingly reasonable for a pub restaurant serving such outstanding meals, all freshly prepared from locally sourced ingredients. With real cask ales, top notch beers and a warm welcome, The Greyhound offers something really special and is an ideal venue for celebratory meals
