With its stunning canalside location and imposing red-brick facade, the Dog & Doublet is a fine example of a traditional English country pub. Three storeys high and bursting with charm, this 18th-Century establishment has a loyal clientele ranging from lucky locals to those who come to take advantage of the six ensuite rooms and close proximity to the M42, Birmingham Airport and NEC, not to mention the comforting food, free Wi-Fi, children's play area and large car park.

Inside it bustles with banter and warmth - if drinking in pubs is declining, the Dog & Doublet doesn't know it. There are plenty of guest ales and ciders on tap, and the food menu is full of old favourites. I began with deep-fried mushrooms with a rich garlic mayo dip, while my companion chose Stilton and broccoli soup from the specials board and was rewarded with strong, creamy flavours and delicious crusty bread.

For the main course I went for steak and ale pie and was served a homemade hunk of buttery pastry well-filled with chunky pieces of meat, while my other half received a satisfying scampi feast complete with plump peas and fat, golden chips. Dessert was spotted dick for him and treacle sponge for me: neither were too heavy, but both were suitably naughty and sweet. This is honest food in a divine setting - a true taste of olde England.
