Lucky ramblers might stumble upon the Chapel House Hotel on a summer's evening, having spent the day exploring Atherstone's historic township. This Georgian hotel overlooks the town's market square and offers an excellent opportunity for a spot of stylish dining. We were welcomed by the sounds of cheerful conversation and tasteful classical music.

No sooner had we been seated than we were presented with an elegant and fresh appetiser. This complimentary cucumber and cous cous tower whet the appetite in anticipation of the meal to come. The concise but exciting à la carte menu, stylish decor and professional service had won me over before the food had even arrived.

The small team of staff do everything in their power to ensure your comfort and contentment. Chef patron Richard Napper prepares each meal freshly to the taste and dietary requirements of the individual, frequently appearing restaurant side to ensure his food was well received. Also evident is Napper's passion for fine wine. Just a glance at the extensive wine list hints at the treasures lurking in the cellar below.

For my starter I enjoyed the King Prawns Somerset; brimming with the evocative aromas of cider and herbs it was a dish of simple but tasty pleasures. The Monkfish Quimperl' - meaty fish in a rich lobster and mushroom sauce - was my fabulous main course. Also on offer is the impressive aubergine tower, beautifully layered with walnuts and spinach.

As dark fell on our summer evening, it was time to consider dessert. Napper has achieved perfection with his peach amaretti, carefully flavoured and presented with a caramelised lattice. And what better way to end than home-made dark chocolate truffles and coffee in the conservatory?
