The Old School House is surrounded by beautiful countryside and was surprisingly easy to get to, being only two minutes away from where the A38, A5 and M6 Toll JT4 meet.

After a warm welcome to the restaurant, we decided to enjoy the views on their sun-drenched terrace as we perused the comprehensive menus over a glass of wine.

Their à la carte and table d'hote menus offer a wide range of dishes celebrating traditional English food with a twist of modern cuisine. After much deliberation we decided to choose from the latter which offers great value for three courses.

For starters we had a beautifully smooth chicken and duck liver paté with a plum sauce, and a salad of avocado pear and apple with blue cheese dressing.

My wonderfully tender, slow-roasted lamb shank with a mint and redcurrant jus was served with creamy mash and parsnip crisps, and my companion had a grilled fillet of sea bass with steamed fennel, spring onion, shaved carrots and dill butter that was cooked to perfection. Marbled chocolate cheesecake and baked lemon tart definitely finished our meal on a high note.

We received impeccable service - helpful and efficient but not intrusive - that was all the more impressive considering there was a 'party night' taking place in their entertainment pavilion and a private function in one of the other rooms.

All in all, a superb meal, in a fantastic setting. I would highly recommended The Old School House for both a romantic meal for two and dining with friends.
