Arriving on a cold, wet afternoon, we were pleased to find a mouth-watering array of cakes, artisan breads and other tempting baked goods waiting for us at Meringue Bakery.

Proprietors, Neil and Sue, have a passion for producing good, honest food from quality, ethically sourced ingredients. The specials board offers delicious lunches, including soup, homemade quiche and other seasonal delights, and a range of breakfast items and hot and cold sandwiches are also available throughout the day. My companion chose the sea bass, which was cooked in a spicy tomato sauce and served with rice and a selection of al dente vegetables, while I enjoyed a generous portion of the freshly baked quiche, accompanied by crisp salad leaves drizzled with a tangy dressing and homemade mayonnaise. The pastry was crisp and light and the soft, creamy filling rich and sumptuous, with generous amounts of bacon and cheese.

For dessert, the café's signature lemon meringue pie was outstanding, comprising a cloud of fluffy meringue encased in sweet, buttery pastry with a sharp and creamy lemon filling - a truly irresistible after-dinner treat. Just as good was my companion's frangipane cake, embedded with sweet, juicy prunes. With a reputation for serving the highest-quality baked goods, Meringue Bakery is a treasure trove of delights you'll be glad to discover
