Wordsley, DY7 5QJ

Formerly a grand family home called Lawnswood House, The Roe Deer was built between 1813 and 1816 for the Foley family. This Regency-era building benefits from beautifully high ceilings and endless natural light that streams through huge windows. Surrounded by acres of beautiful countryside gardens, the pub has a unique country charm and a spacious feel that afford it a relaxed elegance perfect for special occasions. If you’re looking for wholesome family dining, however, don’t let the pub’s elegance fool you – it’s just as suitable for a laid-back roast as it is for a few celebratory drinks.

When it comes to food, you’ll find a stellar line-up of modern pub favourites and a few unique recipes that are sure to hit all the right notes for a delectable three-course feast. A dedicated gluten-free menu is available and there are plenty of veggie and vegan delights to choose from. The menus are updated daily, so you can expect a showcase of the finest seasonal ingredients sourced locally wherever possible. You might start with the likes of pan-fried scallops with butternut squash purée, pickled mushrooms and tarragon dressing, and follow with Malaysian-style curry packed with sweet potato, aubergine and spinach and served with coconut rice and pak choi. If you prefer something a little more traditional, the lamb, roasted parsnip and rosemary pie with mash and buttered greens is second to none. For dessert, it doesn’t get much better than caramelised pineapple enhanced by coconut rum, passion fruit and iced coconut.
