The Windmill Village Hotel is the perfect place to wind down after a hard day of work, with its views of the hotel's 18-hole golf course and glorious surrounding countryside. Its plentiful selection of expertly crafted dishes and fine wines is guaranteed to immediately sooth away your stresses and strains. Having sunk into the most comfortable of tub seating, casually eyeing up the à la carte menu, you'll be more than ready to experience an evening of laid-back dining. If you're a lover of traditional, familiar foods, peruse the grill menu for steak and fish dishes. To fully appreciate the relaxed aura of the place, why not dine in the original coaching cellars and order traditional ales to complement your meal.

To start I opted for the salmon, crab and tarragon fishcake served with stewed peppers, red pesto and cress. The sweetness of the peppers was a perfect match for the crabmeat, which was expertly cooked and mouth-watering. My main course - pork fillet with Dijon-spiced herbs, wrapped in Parma ham with pea and apple purée, boulangére potatoes and sage glace - was a striking expression of artful presentation and inventive flavour combinations. The succulent, fatless pork was cooked to perfection and the purée cut through each mouthful beautifully. My colleague plumped for the Scotch blade of Bourguignon, placed irresistibly on a potato cake and covered in red wine jus. I was informed that it was to die for, and felt rather jealous that I hadn't ordered it myself. After finishing an indulgent dessert, followed by coffee and chocolates, I had made up my mind to return.

You'd expect nothing less than the best from a kitchen commanded by a chef who was personal chef to the king of Jordan (King Hussein) and has cooked around the world - everywhere from Germany and Australia to fantastically tropical Mauritius. His experience shines through in each painstakingly crafted dish. The hotel also continues to make a name for itself - it was recently named 'Best Hotel for 2010' at the Godiva Awards
