For a taste of modern Gallic dining without crossing the Channel, a visit to Le Truc is sure to impress. Le Truc is a quirky, fun French restaurant serving classic, fuss-free French food. The emphasis is on quality food, and it's in no way pretentious - you only need to have a quick look at the website or Twitter feed to see that Le Truc is all about fun, showcasing the wilder side of our closest neighbours. The decor is eclectic and eye-catching, with walls covered in cassette tapes and graffiti, juxtaposed with chandeliers and glitter balls. This is certainly not your typical French restaurant.

The menu is traditional though, touching on the highlights of classic French cooking. To start, you might opt for the box-baked Camembert for two, or a bowl of French onion soup, served with Gruyère croutons. Main course options include bouillabaisse du jour served with crusty bread, or a hearty braised lamb shank navarin with potato rosti and rosemary jus. Vegetarians will enjoy confit garlic polenta with wild mushrooms and puy lentil fricassee, and there are plenty of vegan and gluten-free options too. The dessert menu brings together unusual flavour combinations to ensure an unforgettable end to your meal, with treats like prune and Armagnac cheesecake topped with a cocoa crumb and melon jelly with winter berry compote. As you'd expect from a French restaurant, the wine list is both varied and well-considered. The cocktail menu comprises perfectly executed classic cocktails and innovative new concoctions, so you're sure to find something to satisfy, whatever your taste.

As well as the à la carte menu, Le Truc has special nights and menus so regular visitors will always find fresh ideas. Grazing boards are ideally suited for sharing amongst friends with a few drinks, and the meat board includes braised pig's cheek, pork scratchings, quail Scotch eggs and cured meats, with vegetarian and fish boards available too. Friday night is steak night, with different cuts and sauces each week and a selection of half-price red wines to complement your meal. If your Saturday night was spent on the tiles, Le Truc is a must-visit spot for recuperating on Sunday, as breakfast, brunch and roast dinners are served all day alongside spot-on Bloody Marys
