Oozing historic charm, the stunning building that is now home to The Physician once housed the vast Sampson Gamgee Library for the History of Medicine, hence the pub’s name. Thanks to high ceilings and large sash windows, light floods the bar area and the beautiful garden room that overlooks the spacious terrace. Smaller rooms afford diners a feeling of intimacy, while open fires ensure that diners feel cosy throughout the winter. Afternoon tea is served between noon and 5pm every Monday to Saturday. The pub is dog-friendly so it’s the perfect place to sate your appetite after a stroll with your four-legged companion. At the heart of the building is a large bar constructed from reclaimed wood. Here you’ll find eight local cask ales and ciders, an extensive wine list with over 50 varieties, and an array of spirits.
The food at The Physician is second-to-none, and an abundance of unique and enticing choices are listed on the daily menu. Start with the likes of pan-fried scallops with cauliflower purée roasted pancetta and cauliflower crisps, or a traditional favourite such as chicken liver pâté with carrot and apricot chutney and granary toast. Smoked haddock fishcake topped with a soft poached egg and chive and caper sauce is the perfect lunchtime treat, while tempting mains such as braised shoulder of lamb provide sustenance and tantalise the palate. Special dietary requirements can be catered for, and the friendly team is always on-hand to offer advice.
