The Handmade Pie & Ale House has transformed a British foodie favourite, adding a twist or two to the traditional dish of pie and mash. Situated just off the seafront in Weymouth, this charming pub and restaurant offers a sensational menu of hearty grub including other delicious options for those who want an alternative to pies.

Having entered the restaurant and instantly overhearing diners give great feedback to staff, I couldn’t help but feel excited, and soon selected a pint of fine ale from the extensive bar. The menu offers an ever-changing choice of nine pie flavours from over 40 possible options, all served with either rustic chips or creamy mash alongside garden peas, mushy peas, baked beans or a side salad. A boat of grandmother’s homemade gravy is always offered. To start proceedings, I chose the succulent prawn cocktail served in a rich Marie Rose sauce, while my companion plumped for the glutenfree spicy chicken wings, fried and then coated in a secret recipe marinade. For mains, I went for a pie filled to it’s light pastry brim with tender chicken, punchy chorizo chunks and peppers in paprika sauce, served on a bed of Marmite mash. My partner’s pie of chicken and bacon in a cheesy Texas barbecue sauce had a delicious smoky flavour, and was well-paired with the homemade chunky chips.
