As the sun set into the sea along the Portland coastline, we were shown to our table in the chic Cliff Panoramic Restaurant within The Ocean Hotel. The restaurant certainly lives up to its name; the glass cube-shaped dining room offers stunning panoramic views out to sea. We'd heard through grapevine that the food at The Cliff was worthy of its spectacular location and we were looking forward to experiencing it for ourselves. Our introduction came in the form of succulent hand-dived scallops served with a delightful cauliflower and cumin purée and tender chorizo chunks - giving this dish a Mediterranean twist - and a crayfish cocktail with Bloody Mary jelly. Both were utterly delicious and clearly demonstrated a skilled chef. With mains of slow-roast pork belly and swordfish steak on the way, we soaked up the relaxing atmosphere. The staff were attentive, calm and courteous and we felt very well looked after. Main courses were just as triumphant as the starters. The swordfish was pan-fried to perfection and served with a tangy ratatouille and salsa verde. My companion's pork was melt-in-the-mouth delicious, partnered wonderfully with a subtle grain mustard sauce and comforting bubble and squeak. After we indulged in a raspberry Bakewell tart and ice cream and the iced praline parfait with poached pear (which you simply have to try), we both agreed that this restaurant more than lives up to its reputation.
