Shop Lane, Langton Herring, Weymouth, DT3 4HU
In the picturesque village of Langton Herring, just off the Jurassic Coast road and four miles from Weymouth, is the The Elm Tree Inn. It has olde-worlde charm in spades, with copper pans, dark beams and a part-flagstone floor - history simply oozes from the walls. If you're lucky, one of the regulars might regale you with a tale or two; stories of ghost sightings, smugglers and spies have made this place famous in the area.

This 16th-Century tavern makes families, locals and tourists all very welcome. At lunchtime, why not sit in the pretty garden; order a baguette or sandwich and wash it down with a glass of real ale or cider. All the food is superb and home cooked to order using locally sourced ingredients. On Thursdays there is a 'roast of the day', which is extremely popular and available throughout the day. In the evening, choose from the specials on the blackboard or from the extensive menu. Perhaps order Cajun-grilled sardines to start, black bream fillet to follow and a truly delightful lemon and lime posset to finish; if you're after something more traditional then a trio of sausages, steak and ale pie or vegetarian spinach and feta roulade may tickle your tastebuds. There really is something for everyone to enjoy; and if you are a dedicated jazz or folk lover then go along to one of their special evenings and dance the night away in true Dorset style.
