The Horse with the Red Umbrella

The premises that now house this popular café were once home to The Loyalty Theatre - story has it that the last production to be staged there was The Horse with the Red Umbrella, and that's how this unusually titled tearoom got its name. The present proprietors, who took over ten years ago, take pride in their Italian roots, serving authentic pasta dishes as part of an extensive and affordable menu comprising everything from all-day breakfasts to freshly prepared sandwiches. Everything, including the cakes and desserts, is homemade. We sampled the flavoursome spinach and Brie quiche with salad, and hearty bubble and squeak with two eggs and bacon, both served in generous portions. Finishing up with a traditional cream tea and a fresh fruit trifle, we decided a return visit was certainly on the cards. Indeed, it came as no surprise to be told by one holidaying customer that she has been coming back every year for nine years - now that's a recommendation
