In the basement of 53 East Street in Bridport is a real hidden gem. Step inside through the velvet curtains and you'll find yourself in a light, fresh and friendly caféand restaurant, with painted beech furniture and a sage-green checkerboard floor; local artists' paintings are displayed on the walls. Lula's motto, which can be seen proudly mounted on the wall, is 'eat, drink, relax'.

If you're stopping for just a cup of coffee, you should definitely order a slice of lula-made cake to go with it. Lunchtimes offer lighter meals - perhaps a chicken kebab with summer salad and homemade flatbread, or smoked salmon and scrambled egg in a poppy seed bagel. Wash this down with Origin coffee - the best in Bridport - or possibly a Suki loose-leaf tea. The restaurant transforms at night, with intimate flickering candlelight and uplifting salsa music playing softly in the background creating a warm Latin feel. Moroccan lamps and fairy lights twinkle, making for a unique dining experience.

My companion opted for the delightful carrot and mussel soup to start, followed by whole local bream simply grilled with herb and lemon, and hot chocolate fondant and ice cream for dessert. For me, sweet potato cakes with a coriander and yoghurt dressing, then the tastiest chargrilled organic chicken breast with green salsa, new potatoes, spinach and roasted baby tomatoes. It was aptly topped off with a dessert of caramelised lemon tart. All food is cooked to order using the freshest, best quality, locally sourced ingredients; an extensive wine list is also on offer to accompany your meal, and drivers can enjoy a refreshing Luscombe organic drink.

Lucy and Angela opened lula in October 2008, merging their names to come up with the name of the restaurant. One half of the duo is there each day and night, working hard to ensure your dining experience is a memorable one. Pizza nights feature regularly - £10 per person with a free glass of wine or beer. Don't forget to pick up your loyalty card; mine, needless to say, is permanently in my purse.
