An imposing 13th-century farmhouse set on the edge of Dartmoor, Bearslake Inn has evolved into a charming pub, home to several cosy dining rooms – complete with wood-burning fires – and a spacious garden.

Now owned by Julian and Lisa, this dedicated duo have established a warm and welcoming atmosphere that keeps guests coming back time and time again. Julian is an enthusiastic exponent of the Dartmoor Real Ale Trail but there’s an extensive wine list available too.

I began my meal with confi t duck spring rolls accompanied by piquant plum sauce, while my partner chose crabcakes with creamy sauce gribiche. The portions were generous and it was easy to relax in the comfortable surroundings. While perusing the selection, I noticed that the menu offered some interesting vegetarian choices and Lisa mentioned that the vegan options are becoming increasingly popular too.

My choice of main was one from the daily specials board pan-friend John Dory served on a bed of Dauphinoise potatoes, which was a rich and satisfying dish. My husband likewise enjoyed his steak, which was served with seasonal vegetables and fries. Dessert for us was a fantastic homemade cheesecake and a perfectly cooked crème brûlée. It was clear that Bearslake Inn would make an excellent location for private parties, as well as for memorable lunches and dinners.
