Set in the stunning Tamar Valley village of Bere Ferrers, on the banks of the River Tavy, The Olde Plough Inn dates back to the 16th Century. Once a humble collection of silver miners' cottages, it is now a shining example of a proper Devonshire pub. Cosy and full of character, with a wood-burning stove, beamed ceilings and flagstone flooring, this is the perfect place to sample a light bite or imaginative special.

Enjoy your starter with one of inn's specially selected real ales, perhaps in the beer garden overlooking the river. Why not try the sumptuous homemade red pepper hummus or the crevettes, both of which are beautifully presented. The chef is passionate about using produce from the area. The lamb, for example, couldn't be more local - reared in the village, its tender cutlets were presented on a bed of minted, balsamic new potatoes and green beans. The vegetarian option of field mushrooms with lentils, spinach and peppers was a welcome change from the expected veggie fare. Both dishes had superb depth of flavour.

To finish the evening, there was a choice of tantalising treats, including homemade lemon bread and butter pudding - a zingy dessert that left my heart warmed. Like us, you're sure to dig deep for some Devon silver when you leave - in order to bestow a very well-earned tip.
