The Blue & Green
Latitude 51, Westward Ho!, EX39 1GW
The new management at this spectacularly located bar and restaurant are delighting patrons old and new with their delicious food, exciting drinks and friendly service. The Blue & Green takes pride of place on the green at Westward Ho! and is set only a few metres back from the promenade. The large outdoor terrace at the front is an unbeatable location in warm weather, and the upstairs Blue Family Restaurant offers stunning views out to sea. Dogs are welcome in the ground-floor bar, so the whole family can enjoy a visit to The Blue & Green. The restaurant offers a daily changing specials board that showcases produce sourced from the market and local fishermen. The à la carte menu also features regular fish specialities, with starters such as pan-fried tiger prawns and mains such as baked cod fillet with jasmine vegetable rice and Thai mussel broth. There are also plenty of meat dishes, including the succulent seven-hour braised ranchfarmed lamb and, unusually, there is even a separate vegetarian and gluten-free menu, including a vegetarian Sunday roast. For pudding-lovers like me, dessert offers a treasure trove of delights, including the irresistible chocolate fondant cake with salted caramel ice cream. On the ground floor, the terrace menu in the Green Cocktail Bar offers equally delicious lighter meals such as soup, sandwiches, sharing platters and salads, as well as pub classics such as fish of the day with triple-cooked chips, and a range of generously chunky burgers. The excellent pizzas, including gluten-free versions, are available to take away. Until 11am you can fill up on one of the copious breakfasts, while lighter options such as porridge and a veggie bap are available for smaller appetites. If you’re there in the evening and don’t have to drive, make sure you sample The Blue & Green’s exciting new cocktail menu, which includes the signature Blue Lagoon and Dune Bug. There’s also a selection of great local ale and excellent wine. Big matches are screened at weekends, and there are live music events on Saturday nights. With its stunning setting, attentive service and fabulous food and drinks, The Blue & Green in Westward Ho! deserves an exclamation mark of its own.
