Hartland Quay, Nr. Bideford, EX39 6DU
A notable shipping and smuggling port, Hartland Quay boasts a rich and colourful maritime history, and even has its very own shipwreck and smuggling museum. The museum is filled with various artifacts collected from the many ships that have been wrecked over the years on the quay's infamously rocky shore, and tells the story of its use from the 16th Century through to the modern day. Hartland Quay Hotel sits opposite the museum, and offers easy access to the South West Coast Path and fantastic seaside accommodation complete with delicious home-cooked food and rustic charm aplenty.

In the hotel's Wreckers Retreat Bar, guests and visitors alike can choose from an extensive menu offering pub classics such as breaded scampi with chips, and sausage and mash, and a selection of dishes often incorporating locally caught fish from the harbour. In fine weather, diners can sit outside and benefit from breathtaking views across the Atlantic Ocean, while the adjoining Wreckers Retreat Bar, with its exposed beams and nautical decorations, provides the perfect setting for winter gatherings. The Sea Breeze Café, serving homemade cakes and cream teas, is open between 2.30pm and 5pm from June until the end of August. With a wide range of real ales and ciders also available, and a host of friendly locals to keep you in good company, you're sure to have a merry time at Hartland Quay.
