Set right in the centre of town, this 16th-century coaching inn has mellowed into a beautiful oak-timbered local pub, specialising in good beer, superb wine and excellent food. All ingredients are locally sourced and beautifully cooked. I started with meaty king prawns with tangy chilli and lime dressing, while my partner chose the warm duck salad. For the main course she opted for roast lamb shank with cranberry, mint and brandy sauce – her satisfi ed smile said it all. I went for the roast duck with blackberry and Port sauce, which was rich and undeniably delicious. My partner completed the meal with white chocolate and Baileys cheesecake. Regrettably, all I could manage was a black coffee and a pledge to come prepared for a veritable feast next time.
