Steps Bistro was opened in 2007 by chef Rob Gill, who has been involved in the catering business his whole life - he began his career aged just 11, as a waiter at his parents' hotel. When Rob isn't working his magic in the kitchen, he takes the time to chat with diners - as a result, his bistro has a strong following of satisfied, loyal customers.

Locally sourced ingredients are used wherever possible; the restaurant proudly displays a list of West Country suppliers on the menu. Various set menu options are offered, as well as a range of tapas and a separate menu of lunchtime specials, leaving us in no doubt that Rob takes every taste and budget into account. Refreshingly, vegetarians are catered for as deliciously as everyone else, and you'll even find that most meals are either gluten-free or can be made so. My main of hearty braised beef with Guinness and onion gravy featured top-quality meat, and my partner was delighted with her grilled fillet of plaice with succulent garlic prawns - a flavourful taste of the sea, which lay just a stone's throw away.

We finished with two of Rob's homemade desserts: chocolate, orange and Grand Marnier ice cream for me and profiteroles for her. These treats confirmed Steps Bistro as a real find - seek it out, tucked away on the steps leading up from Fleet Street, and enjoy.
