Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The Kents is located in Wellswood, just a two-minute walk from the fascinating prehistoric Kents Cavern. This family-friendly venue is split into a cosy traditional bar, a relaxed dining area and a sheltered, leafy garden. This popular eatery offers visitors a menu bursting with hearty pub classics. We opted to start with a couple of moreish, tapas-style dishes from the grazing menu: honey-roasted baby chorizo and homemade salt cod fritters with spinach aioli. I followed with one of The Kents’ speciality gourmet burgers, the Truffle Shuffle – an indulgent combination of wild mushrooms, spinach and Stilton, topped with truffle mayonnaise and liberally sprinkled with crispy fried onions. My companion thoroughly enjoyed the slow-roasted ham hock hash: crispy potatoes, onions and peppers fried together with shredded ham. It was perfectly seasoned with a range of spices and came topped with a fried egg.
This establishment really believes in the importance of quality and locally sourced produce, and you can taste the freshness. As well as being a great place to eat, this top-notch pub has a fantastic selection of drinks – the comprehensive craft gin collection includes 52 varieties, making this a haven for gin enthusiasts. We sampled the gin tasting board, which featured three different types: Steampunk – a bold gin featuring liquorice, star anise and the zest of citrus fruits; a sweet, tangy Warner Edwards variety, Victoria’s Rhubarb Gin; and Hedgehog Gin, made with damiana, ginseng, guarana and bergamot – otherwise known as the love herbs. We completed our delightful meal with two sumptuous desserts – a rich, oozing chocolate fondant and creamy raspberry and maple crème brûlée.
