Old Mill Road, Torquay, TQ2 6HW
This listed 17th-Century building is set just five minutes from the train station in the heart of a quiet residential area. Just off the road and surrounded by a large garden, it's popular all year round.

We visited on an early evening in spring and were greeted by the informal buzz of couples, friends and families, all enjoying the home-cooked fare. Chelston Manor is known for its generous portions and reasonable prices - including great monthly deals - and its delicious yet affordable Sunday carvery, so it was no surprise to find the place busy.

The menu offers a good variety of made-to-order fare, suitable for any time of day. From seafood chowder with scallops and plaice to mature Cheddar and sweet fruit chutney sandwiches; pork and apple burger to sea bass and cod fishcakes, you will be spoilt for choice. I enjoyed a punchy vegetable burger consisting of puy lentils, grated carrots and onions with a good kick of spice. My guests opted for the more traditional steak and kidney pudding served with creamy mash. For dessert, we both opted for a Charlotte; one pear and caramel, one strawberry and white chocolate - both were sweet and light. Chelston Manor is also popular for its range of real ales - perfect for leisurely supping in the sunny garden
