In a guide that is packed full of excellent places to dine, the Bay Tree stands out as exceptional and it is very easy to find opposite the Abbey car park. This delightful restaurant has a warm friendly atmosphere with almost indescribably good food. It is a Georgian townhouse with a modern bright interior, tastefully decorated and lit to display the artwork of the owner, Lesley O'Brien. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, divided into three specific areas, and therefore very suitable for private parties (up to 20 comfortably). During the summer the walled garden provides a quite delightful retreat for a light lunch or a romantic evening meal.

The lunch menu is extremely inspiring, examples being, fillet beef stroganoff, lemon pesto risotto cakes (encasing sun-blush tomato and mozzarella) and Old Gloucester pork loin with mustard sauce. Prices range from £4.50 to £9. The dinner menu is even more exciting; dishes are based on top quality locally sourced meat and vegetables (Hereford beef, Gloucester pork and Cotswold lamb). My companion could not resist pan-fried black tiger prawns with fresh ginger, coriander and garlic, whilst I indulged in the creamiest goat's cheese (crotin de chevre) with walnuts and red berry dressing. Our main courses were Hereford sirloin with green pepper sauce, crisp green beans and wonderful sautéed potatoes (delightful), and pan-fried duck breast with caramelised apricots, potato purée, carrot mousse and duck jus with redcurrant. It was every bit as good as it sounds and we went on to participate in the pudding speciality, a taster dish of four (or five) of the house desserts, which we greedily shared and cleaned the 'assiette' with no problem.

The quality of local ingredients and range and depth of the expert chef combine with the warmth and comfort of the dining rooms to make dinner or lunch an experience you will want to repeat as soon as possible.
