Hatherley Manor hotel is handily located just ten minutes from historic Gloucester and is a lovely place to relax, dine and stay. The 17th-Century country-house hotel is home to 50 en-suite rooms, offering all the comfort and luxury you might expect, plus a cosy bar area and the not-to-be-missed Dewinton Restaurant.

The restaurant is open to visitors as well as hotel guests, and on the evening of our visit there were many happy diners enjoying the atmosphere - but the excellent service never faltered. Once we were comfortably seated, nibbling on bread and sipping a quality merlot, we perused the menu. My partner couldn't resist the ham hock terrine with piccalilli and toasted brioche to start, while I opted for the delicious tomato soup (the chef's flavour of the day). My seared, pan-fried fillet of salmon main - complemented by a creamy white wine, herb and saffron sauce and al dente vegetables - left me very satisfied, while my companion devoured her expertly cooked rump steak with peppercorn sauce. I had to assist in finishing the accompanying chunky rustic chips - but this was no chore. Desserts of creme brulée and profiteroles with vanilla ice cream were classics done deliciously well.

Hatherley Manor offers some superb deals, so check their website for details. It would be a crime to miss out
