The Village, Ashleworth, Nr. Gloucester, GL19 4HT
In the village of Ashleworth you'll find a delightful country dining pub that is certainly worth the short drive out of the city. The Queen's Arms is an oak-beamed, 17th-Century inn that's full of character. Originally from South Africa, owners Tony and Gill Burreddu are genuinely warm and interested in all of their guests. The ambience is relaxing and homely, with comfortable chairs and large old wooden tables. In winter the roaring log fire is welcoming and in summer the courtyard is a delightful suntrap.

Creative specials sit alongside traditional pub favourites such as faggots, liver and bacon, and steak and kidney pie. We plumped for fresh halibut fillet with an oyster mushroom and sauvignon blanc cream sauce and a rib-eye steak basted with The Queen's Arms' own special baste, served with a Port and Stilton sauce. Both were delicious, succulent, sizeable and cooked to perfection. Clearly a lot of effort goes into sourcing the best-quality local meats here. Remember to leave room for one of their tempting homemade desserts, which are also worthy of praise.

On a definite return visit I would love to try many other specials, notably one of their traditional South African dishes, as well as their superb Sunday roast. They also have an excellent cellar with well-kept beers, a fine international wine list and 22 malt whiskies. The menu is updated weekly on their website.
