The Barn Owl
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Located just off the main road into Torbay, The Barn Owl is packed with quirky, rustic charm; the stone floors, wood beams, engaging pictures and characterful artefacts depict the history of this 300-year-old former farmhouse. There is an elegant dining room with an exquisite moulded ceiling, cosy nooks for more informal dining and comfy sofas for lounging. There are also some lovely touches like free fruit and newspapers, and an abundance of books and colouring activities to occupy youngsters.
The menu offers a good selection of classics, including barbecue ribs and wings, burgers and steaks, award-winning pies, Sunday roasts, and a two-course children’s menu for just £5.50. We shared a mezze board, which was perfect for two and included flatbreads, hummus and olives – an ideal way to start our evening. For our main courses we enjoyed Cajun-crusted salmon with spicy jambalaya rice, salad and creamy dip, and one of the vegetarian options, homity pie, which was complemented by tomato sauce, Savoy cabbage and butternut mash. It’s always hard to resist pudding, so we didn’t even try; we savoured chocolate brownie generously doused in chocolate sauce and served with ice cream, as well as a tasty chocolate and cherry tart.
The Barn Owl is picturesque, laid-back and comfortable, serving good food and lovely Badger ales, and is a popular destination for friends, families and groups.
