Anise is a haven of Mediterranean cuisine, set in the heart of Somerset’s county town. With its relaxed atmosphere and emphasis on great food, this restaurant has pioneered the concept of ‘sophisticated rusticity’ – a more casual alternative to fine dining. No one is excluded at Anise, as there’s a range of vegetarian and vegan dishes on offer.

Between Thursday and Sunday, guests can enjoy a tasty, Mediterranean-inspired lunch at Anise. Begin with classic ham hock terrine or aromatic cumin and cauliflower soup, before sampling the braised blade of beef or the Lebanese falafel with saffron rice. Those dining later in the day are offered the evening à la carte menu. Seafood-lovers have a choice of sea bream with hearty Sardinian seafood stew or baked hake with a pine nut and olive crust, while meat-lovers can choose from delicate confit guinea fowl and braised pork belly, among other delicious dishes. For vegetarians there’s also a baked sweet potato dish, served with vegetable tagine and parsley and lemon couscous. If you’re staying for dessert, you’ll be spoilt for choice by Anise’s range of Mediterranean classics. The Moroccan orange and almond cake accompanied by lemon curd and mango and passion fruit sorbet is a celebration of citrus flavours, while the sweet and creamy mascarpone cheesecake is equally wonderful. It’s also well worth popping by on Thursdays for the Taste of the Mediterranean menu, which offers five courses for £25 per person.
