The picturesque Bell at Selsley takes destination dining to new heights, in more ways than one. Perched on the top of Selsley Common, its view across the Woodchester Valley and over to Rodborough Common is stunning.

In addition to breathtaking views, the cuisine at The Bell also delights. The energy of new proprietors, Mark Payne and Sarah Watts, is evident from the moment you enter. A warm welcome awaits in the tasteful, newly decorated bar area, which blends contemporary furnishings, classic tweeds and historic charm.

The menu delights. The creative flair and talent of chef-patron Mark Payne is evident across the whole menu, which benefits from home-grown produce from Mark and Sarah's allotment and locally sourced meat. There's traditional bar food on offer alongside more creative, modern dishes. To start, we sampled cumin aubergine, quinoa and pine nut salad, and a dish of smoked salmon with lovage mousse and granary bread. Afterwards, my smoked haddock fishcake with cherry tomatoes and spinach took the humble fishcake to a whole other level - flavoursome fish complemented by perfectly fresh vegetables in a light buttery sauce. For those with a more carnivorous palate, The Bell's beef burger is a must - locally sourced tender beef served with The Bell's notorious triple-cooked chips. My partner was very impressed.

Desserts are inventive and delicious. Local gooseberry and elderflower fool, served with shortbread, Bisley honey cheesecake and strawberries received high praise from my partner. I opted for the more traditional choice of a cheeseboard; a delicious selection including cheeses hailing from nearby.

Traditional ales sit alongside a varied wine list, boasting options to suit any occasion and making The Bell a great place for a relaxed lunch with friends or a celebratory meal with family. The staff are professional, welcoming and knowledgeable. The team behind The Bell cleverly blend the contemporary with the traditional, and the warmth and energy of chef-owner, Mark, spills out from the kitchen. If you are lucky enough to visit on a clear, warm day, the al fresco dining is second to none, with views right across the valley
