Amberley, Nr. Stroud, GL5 5AF

Whether you're looking for a place to dine or somewhere to spend the night in a glorious countryside setting, a stop-off at The Amberley Inn is a must. Found on the edge of the National Trust-owned Minchinhampton Common, the distinctive inn boasts far-reaching views across the Golden Valley. This 19th-Century building has retained its charm and character outside and in, with original oak-panelled walls and parquet flooring still intact. Fantastic food and drink is the focus here: all meals are expertly prepared using carefully chosen produce from the region, and local fine wines and ales (which are all brewed within a three-mile radius) are plentiful. The seasonal menu features British cuisine with a French influence - you might like to try the haddock gratin with smoked haddock, spinach and cheese sauce to start, followed by pan-fried duck breast with Dauphinoise potatoes and something sweet for afters. For those with special dietary requirements, a range of gluten and lactose-free options are available. As for the accommodation, the inn's 13 en-suite rooms are all tastefully decorated, and many afford stunning views across the valley or the well-tended gardens. Some even have elegant four-poster beds. For romantic weekends, walking holidays or business trips, this is the perfect place to rest your head
