The first thing you'll notice about JK's at St Michaels is the absolutely pictureperfect setting. Overlooking the magnificent St Mary's Church at the heart of tourist-friendly Painswick, the restaurant is housed within a beautiful 17th- Century building. Jean (chef profile page 55), together with business partner Angela, are co-owners of this wonderful eatery; here, she has realised her vision to serve fabulous, inventive, locally sourced food at affordable prices, coaxing visitors to return time after time.

Inspired creativity was evident from the word go. The pear and black pudding starter with a sticky balsamic glaze was superb - attractively presented and blending luscious textures - and the Roquefort, chicory and walnut salad was a classic dish executed with real skill.

Mains were generous. The vibrant sweet chilli sauce enlivened the pan-fried sea bass, stimulating the palate with its piquant flavours; accompanied by hand-cut chips, this is sure to be a favourite. The salmon too was outstanding, subtly enriched by a whisky cream sauce and complemented by a medley of green vegetables. We finished with the smile-inducing banana and Baileys bread and butter pudding and the fruity French-inspired cherry clafoutis.

Word has got round about JK's, judging by the contented customers we encountered, so book early to avoid disappointment.
