Tucked within a little courtyard beside an old mill is The Canteen – a vibrant, energetic café that’s gained a devoted following of locals and tourists alike. If the sun is beating down, pull up a seat in the pleasant courtyard and sit among the flower pots, or snuggle up on one of the sofas inside. While the constantly developing menu is brimming with fresh and healthy food, the shabby-chic design also gives this gem distinct appeal. We began by sampling a pretty salad with edible flowers, grapes, walnuts, and beetroot terrine. I tucked into carrot citrus salad with goat’s cheese, and my companion the poached egg and avocado on sourdough. We then washed down generous slices of gorgeous cake with a rich cup of coffee. The Canteen is well worth hunting down and is ideal for parties and birthdays.
