The Halfway House

The new owners of the delightful Halfway House in Box have made it their mission to give the village its pub back, and the welcome you'll now receive is as warm as the roaring log fire.

The Halfway House is dog and welly friendly, so everyone is made to feel thoroughly at home. The bar menu is reasonably priced from £4 to £10 for hearty comfort food - doorstop sandwiches, chip butties, bangers and mash, and fish and chips all feature, and vegetarians are not forgotten either. The restaurant menu offers non-fussy dishes ranging from fish of the day from Brixham to traditionally aged meats. All produce used to create the menus is local and, as such, dishes are introduced and removed from the menu in accordance with the changing seasons. You can expect dishes like pan-roasted hake served with new potatoes, broccoli, almonds and burnt butter, or a deliciously succulent local fillet steak served with all the trimmings. Another feature of a bygone age that the new owners have reintroduced is the carving trolley, brought to your table so you can watch your Sunday roast being put together especially for you. Dessert is no passing thought either, and you can choose from the likes of baked white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry ripple ice cream and, my personal favourite, warm Bakewell tart.
