This cosy pub dates back to 1857 and was originally two cottages; nowadays, it is a charming place to enjoy a midweek lunch or a top-notch Sunday carvery. Surrounded by lovely countryside and located close to the Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, The Railway is an ideal place for walkers (and their four-legged friends) to rest their weary limbs and enjoy a refreshing pint. It is also a popular party venue, with space for a marquee in the beer garden.

The menu features classic pub dishes, all cooked by landlady Sharon. The homemade cottage pie and sausage and mash are both local favourites. Sharon is also known to make a mean lasagne, as well as a tempting range of tasty desserts - perhaps indulge in the rhubarb crumble (made with rhubarb from the pub garden), a creamy gateau or moreish sticky toffee pudding.

Yet the hearty fare and sociable atmosphere aren't the only attributes of this charming pub; its pretty garden overlooks the river and is the place to be in the summer. Children will be entertained by the resident chickens and ducks, while adults can put their feet up and enjoy a beverage or two. The bar serves an excellent range of thirst-quenching ciders, including Cheddar Valley and a strong cider by Thatchers nicknamed the 'Railway Sleeper', plus quaffable tipples from Footprint Wines.
