The Stirrup Cup is a traditional 18th-centry English Inn, where dried hops hang from exposed beams, stone walls bear antique tankards, and real fires crackle.

Yet though the aesthetics are of centuries past, the menu is decidedly 21st century, thanks to the culinary creativity of a husband-and-wife team with over 30 years experience of catering, Andy and Mary Baylis.

There are plenty of enticing options here: Bisley bangers and mash, pan-fried calves liver or moules et frites. I was delighted with my starter of devilled whitebait piled high on a succulent, citrusy salad, and my companion equally impressed by his Calamari à la Romana.

For the main course I went for steak and ale pie - comfort food for the soul. My companion tried the roasted lamb shank, and the meat was a perfect - tender pink - and literally fell from the bone. For dessert at The Stirrup Cup, you should know that their sticky toffee pudding may well be the best known to man.

There is an impressive list of over 24 wines plus champagnes, and Andy and Mary are there to ensure that you're not only spoilt for choice of cuisine, but downright spoiled rotten when it comes to service.

I shall return for certain, and I wonder how long it will take to work through the whole menu.
