Offering expertly crafted, retro diner-style cuisine, The Diner is a perfect choice for those looking for a fun and indulgent dining experience. This popular eatery is centrally located on Nelson Street in the town centre, just a short walk from the train station – a convenient spot to round off a fun-filled day exploring Stroud’s creative scene or the nearby countryside. Run by actress Tamzin Malleson, with breakfasts sometimes served by her partner Keith Allen, those visiting The Diner may find themselves joined by the occasional celebrity.

It was clear from the friendly welcome we received that great service is something the team prides itself on. We were impressed by the colourful interior complete with provocative artwork adorning the walls, and enjoyed the retro pegboard menus above the counter indicating the latest additions to the list, as well as drinks and cocktails.

The menu itself comprised classic and customisable burgers, mouth-watering hotdogs, nachos and mac and cheese. Considering the generous portion sizes, the dishes were very reasonably priced. After some time spent pondering the menu, I chose the succulent cheeseburger with bacon and my partner opted for the classic hotdog. My burger was impressively sized, filled with fresh, crunchy salad, and topped with blue cheese. My partner was delighted with his choice; the jumbo pork dog with slow-cooked ale-soaked onions, ketchup and mustard served in a soft sourdough bun went down a treat. Set on the complete The Diner experience, we both opted for fries to share along with awe-inspiring ice cream floats. To top it all off, we couldn’t resist the DIY sundae option. We were handed pencils and an extravagant list of Marshfield Farm’s real dairy ice cream flavours, sweet bases, tempting sauces and toppings, and pored over designing our own dream sundaes.

With a full vegan menu, as well as gluten-free options and a menu for children, The Diner is an ideal place to treat the whole family and truly does cater for all tastes. With a lively atmosphere, great service and a focus on fresh local produce, it’s no wonder the restaurant has become a community staple after only recently celebrating its first anniversary. Keep an eye on The Diner’s Facebook and Instagram for exciting upcoming events and offers.
