12 Market Place, Wincanton, BA9 9LP

The market town of Wincanton is home to The Bear Inn, a charming family-run pub serving wholesome British fare. Fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels will be interested to hear that Wincanton is officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork – the premier city in the fantasy series – and The Bear Inn is the headquarters for Hogswatch, a bi-annual gathering of Discworld fans from around the globe. In fact, Terry Pratchett himself was a patron of the pub. It’s not just Discworld fans who will want to check out this charming establishment though; there’s a whole host of reasons to visit.

Pull up a stool in the dog-friendly bar and enjoy a pint of well-kept local ale or Somerset cider. Those dining can settle by the log burner and sample traditional, hearty fare. Light bites include potato wedges with crispy bacon and Somerset Cheddar alongside smoked haddock and mozzarella fishcakes with salad and homemade slaw. Main courses include favourites such as 8oz rump steak served with a choice of sauces, as well as succulent gammon with fried eggs, mushrooms, onion rings, tomatoes and peas. Those with a sweet-tooth won’t want to pass up the opportunity to sample The Bear’s popular homemade banoffee for dessert. On Sundays the pub serves a delicious roast with a choice of three meats served with all the trimmings. The pub also hosts pool and skittles teams and poker nights so there’s a variety of activities to get involved in. All that and more makes The Bear Inn a real community hub.
