Totnes is a flourishing foodie destination and home to the Waterside Bistro. Sitting next to the bridge above River Dart, it sits in an enviable position with views towards Vire Island to be enjoyed from the heated outside seating area. If you’re after informal yet friendly surroundings in which to relax with a tipple or tuck into fuss-free food, Waterside Bistro is the place to be. Clearly we aren’t the only ones who think so, as the bistro was a hive of activity with families, couples and friends relaxing around tables when we popped in.

Our host for the evening warmly welcomed us at the bar, which offers a host of local ale, cider and juices. The bistro is proud to work with many local suppliers and names such as Luscombe Drinks, Otter Brewery, Salcombe Brewery and Ashridge Cider take the lead.

The menu has a superb range of choice, from locally caught fi sh to homemade pizzas, and there’s also a specials board. Our waiter had great local knowledge and made us feel as though the bistro was our regular. For starters, we opted for the fresh tomato, mozzarella and peppery rocket salad with olives and pesto, and gooey grilled goat’s cheese atop toasted focaccia and accompanied by a sundried tomato and rocket salad.

Up next was the Waterside fish pie, which came packed with delicious smoked hake, salmon, pollock and a little boiled egg topped with cheesy mash – a superb comfort dish. Meanwhile, my partner demolished the Waterside West Country beefburger with Monterey Jack cheese and bacon, served with a bucket of fluffy chips. Two scoops of vanilla and coffee Yarde Farm ice cream served with homemade shortbread, and creamy vanilla crème brûlée drizzled with berry compote, and we were contentedly done. Both dishes excelled and if we had any room left, we would have definitely gone for more coffee ice cream.

The Waterside Bistro opens daily for breakfast, which includes choices ranging from hearty full English to pastries and coffee, and has a loyalty card scheme as well as gift vouchers.
