There's nothing like a stroll along the sand to give you an appetite for seafood. Located on the coastal path with absolutely breathtaking views over Start Bay, The Kings Arms is so close to the sea that if you take a table on the outside patio you can hear the waves breaking below.

Rob Dawson and his family have ensured that wherever possible they use produce from the local area, and their long-established relationship with local fishermen and market traders means their lemon sole and scallops are as fresh as can be. It's no surprise that Which? magazine has voted The Kings Arms one of the top places to eat seafood in the UK. Fresh lobsters and crabs are landed live on Start Bay itself, so you can rest assured that your large whole crab was caught just a few hours before it found its way into your salad. We visited on a warm afternoon in April and were immediately bowled over by how at home we were made to feel. As we shook the sand from our shoes, we were brought a basket of warm homemade bread and encouraged to take our time over the menu. Eventually I settled upon the Kings Arms fish soup - a hearty concoction that would almost do for a main course - served with saffron, Gruyére and a spicy rouille. It was exquisite, as was the carpaccio of beef with strawberry gazpacho that arrived for my husband - an unusual combination of flavours that complemented one another beautifully. To follow I chose the roast cod loin with a sweet and crunchy maple and walnut crust, accompanied by a poached pear and chive butter broth, while my husband plumped for the grilled lemon sole with minted peas and serrano ham. To finish we shared a garden lavender and honey creme brûlée, smooth and sweet, topped with crunchy bitter caramel and served with almond tuiles.

What wonderful food, made with a real fondness and respect for the region. We left with full stomachs and smiles on our faces, satisfied that we'd experienced Devonshire cuisine at its very best.
