The Millbrook Inn
Located in the picture-perfect village of South Pool, The Millbrook Inn is a family-run pub with community firmly at its heart. The menu features the finest Devon produce sourced from local farmers, growers and fishermen, to produce exceptional French-inspired cuisine. This marvellous establishment has won numerous accolades and it’s not hard to see why; there is genuine pride in the quality of the ingredients that are used in every dish on the daily changing menu.
I opted to start with flavoursome octopus escabeche marinated in white wine vinegar, red pepper and shallot sauce, served with croutons and a tasty salad. My companion plumped for seared Start Bay scallops served with pea purée, crumbled black pudding and basil oil. The influence of the international chefs is evident in the exquisitely cooked signature dish bouillabaisse; it may have its roots in the city of Marseille but is prepared here using the freshest local Devon fish and shellfish. We also thought very highly of the rump of spring lamb with sweetbreads and kidneys in red wine jus. The succulent meat was beautifully presented and served with sautéed new potatoes and morel mushrooms. Perhaps the crowning glory of this fine eatery is dessert – made fresh every day and constantly changing. We opted for pear frangipane tart with cream and berry compote, and vanilla and rhubarb panna cotta that was perfectly balanced with lemon tuile biscuits. To complement your meal there’s a carefully curated wine list with a varied selection of tipples available by the glass. There are also three regularly changing local ales and a great selection of craft beer, and if you fancy an digestif, the extensive whiskey collection is a connoisseur’s delight.
The Millbrook holds exciting events year round, including summer barbecues in the pleasant stream-side garden, and regular music evenings. There is also the popular Butchery Dinner, where guests are taught to source, prep and butcher a particular animal, before enjoying a delectable four course meal. The Butchery Dinners have so far focused on suckling pig, lamb, shellfish, yellow fin tuna and roe deer. Visitors can also stay in the award-winning Millbrook Loft – a stylish apartment, with a balcony overlooking the glorious Devon countryside. Guests staying in the apartment can order meals directly from the pub to enjoy in the attractive dining room.
