If you love good food in historic buildings full of character and atmosphere, it is worth seeking out The Cherub. Built in 1380, it is the oldest building in the bustling port of Dartmouth. Walking straight into the bar from the street, mind your head as you are welcomed by friendly staff into an intimate setting. Enjoy a drink and nibble on olives or rustic breads with balsamic olive oil while relaxing in the bar or quieter restaurant area upstairs.

Fish and shellfish feature prominently on the menu, along with a good choice of meat and a vegetarian option. Starters and lighter options include local scallops with black pudding and apple purée, which is a superb combination of tastes and textures; or you might like to try the 'Cherub smokie' (a perfectly balanced dish of flaked haddock in a creamy sauce), a tomato and olive tapenade on bruschetta, or a seasonal dish of steamed samphire with poached egg on toast. The Cherub's chef excels in producing carefully chosen combinations of fresh, clean tastes balanced with good, strong flavours. Picking a main course is made even harder thanks to an excellent choice of specials, such as sea bass, which comes with an array of colourful fresh veg, lifted by citrus butter and plenty of fresh lemon. The rich flavour of spring lamb cutlets is balanced with creamy feta and the clean flavours of a Greek salad. Subtly peppered hand-cut chips are an excellent accompaniment to the meat dishes.

Puddings are equally difficult to choose from. A wonderfully light summer pudding is packed full of berries, while the sharp and creamy lemon curd cheesecake is accompanied by a quenelle of local clotted cream. The West Country cheeseboard may also tempt you. There is a good choice of four or five local ales (guest beers may come from a local microbrewery) and the local Sharpham vineyard is represented on the varied wine list. The Cherub is understandably very popular and, with limited seating, make sure you book ahead to avoid being disappointed.
