Tytherington is a lovely little village with a charming pub nestled in its heart. The ancient church of St James, with its impressive crenellated tower, stands beside The Swan, which is a listed 17th-century farmhouse that became a pub in the early 19th century.

Proprietors Nikki and Shane have recently overseen an extensive refurbishment. The restaurant is fi tted with wooden panelling, and beautiful decorative details add an air of casual elegance. Machines that were once used in the farmhouse, including sewing machines and mangles, are decorated with colourful designs; the result is thoroughly contemporary, while preserving the heritage of the house.

We visited on a blissfully sunny day and were cheerfully escorted to our table in the cool and cosy wood-panelled restaurant. Some of the guests chose to eat outside in the pretty walled garden, where white umbrellas shaded the wooden tables and pots of lavender filled the air with its calming scent.

My companion began with the king prawns served on toasted ciabatta and topped with sweet chilli sauce. I opted for the devilled chicken livers served atop toasted focaccia with a bacon crisp to start, and was not disappointed.

After learning from the friendly team that all food is made fresh to order, we awaited our mains eagerly. My companion was delighted with his ginger-, soy- and honey-marinated duck breast, served on hoisin noodles with Oriental vegetables. I couldn’t resist the 10oz rib-eye, served with a side of fresh mixed vegetables. Both were very generously proportioned, and masterfully prepared.

Tempting desserts included lemon tart, sticky toffee pudding, and cheesecake of the day. For the savoury palate, the selection of cheese included Old Winchester, Worcestershire honey and fig, and Somerset chilli. Whether you’re visiting Berkeley Castle, Tortworth Court, or climbing the hills to see the Tyndale Monument, you’ll find Tytherington the perfect place to stop for a relaxing and indulgent meal. At the heart of this warm community, The Swan will have you returning time and again to enjoy the welcoming hospitality and delicious food offering.
